A collection of multi-material 3d printing work.
Year :
2024
Role :
Computational Designer
Tool :
Rhino Grasshopper
Project Duration :
6 weeks

Multi-material 3D printing :
Multi-material 3D printing is a process where two or more distinct materials are combined within a single 3D print to achieve parts with varied functional, mechanical, or aesthetic properties.
In this project, I am exploring the optical and aesthetic side.

Transparency :
I wrote a Rhino Grasshopper C# component that can turn any image into a ready-to-print geometry. The depth extruded is based on the lightness of the image. I experimented with clear material and different translucent black materials here.

Geometry :
I used p5.js to create a rotating moving images like below. Then, with Grasshopper, I could turn (2D pixels + time) into 3D voxels so that i could print out the geometry.

Summary :
This project explores multi-material 3D printing through computational design, focusing on optical effects and material transparency. Using Rhino Grasshopper and p5.js, I transformed dynamic images into printable geometries. A custom C# component mapped image lightness to depth, enabling prints with nuanced translucency and voxel-based forms over a 6-week period.
